Jesús Barbeito is a Spanish painter who is in love with painting. He describes his work as a mixture of collage, painting and recycling. With these elements, he forms and weaves compositions on canvas. Using pieces of burlap, gauze, fabrics, pigments, and paint, he creates a very intimate material universe. The textures in his paintings are coarse and unrefined. Barbeito frays, tears and sews materials to make the surface of his artwork come alive and truly dazzle.
Barbeito’s artwork juxtaposes abstraction with the figurative and stillness with animation. He is inspired by the abstraction and Informalism of Spanish painter, Antoni Tàpies, and the strength, energy and irreverence of Andy Warhol's Pop art. His work ennobles raw materials such as an ordinary cloth or tattered pieces of fabric. In the orchestrated chaos created in his artwork, his materials are exalted to a new status of what a painting can be.
