About The Artist
Born in Berkeley, California, Sonia Calderón grew up in the outer Twin Cities of Minnesota. Self taught, she began painting at the age of 5. Trained at the Art Academy in San Francisco, and Darmstadt Applied Sciences in Hessen, Germany, Calderón’s interests include fashion, design, mysteries of nature and the human experience. She currently resides in Los Angeles. Her artistic influences are several German Expressionistic painters of the 20th century as well as photographers that play with light and subliminal concepts. Her process is an exploration with color, depth, patterns, mood and a sense of place.
About The Artwork
Calderón’s professional career as an abstract painter explores the intense intersection of the seen and unseen. With a keen eye for juxtaposition and balanced abstraction, she is guided by her intuitive pursuit of the emotional undercurrents of personal experience. Drawn to profound extremes of light and dark, euphoria and surrender, senses and metaphysical musings, her influences include several abstract expressionist painters of the 20th century, fashion and design, nature, and street photographers who capture glam and guilty pleasures.
